Texas State Fair Corn Dogs (1976)

  • 6 - 8 hot dogs
  • 2/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  •  2 tbspns sugar
  • 1 1/2 tspns baking powder
  • 1 tspn salt
  • 2 tbspns oil
  • 2/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
Combine all ingredients for batter. Boil hot dogs, put stick in the end of each dog, and dip in batter.

Cook in deep fat at 36- degrees until brown. Serves 6 to 8.

Mennonite Hot Dog Relish with Green Tomatoes (1950)

  • 1 peck green tomatoes
  • 1 medium-sized head cabbage
  • 6 red sweet peppers
  • 6 medium-sized onions
  • 1 cup salt
  • 3 pints vinegar
  • 8 cups sugar
  • 2 tbspns mixed pickle spices
Grind tomatoes in food grinder. Add salt and let stand overnight. Drain and add ground peppers and onions, and finely chopped cabbage. 

Combine sugar and vinegar. Add spices that have been tied in a bag. Add this liquid to the mixed vegetables, and simmer for 30 minutes. Pack into hot jars and seal.

Bourbon Hot Dogs (1975)

Combine:
  • 1 cup catsup
  • 1 cup Bourbon
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Bring mixture to a boil.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Add hot dogs, cut into bite-sized pieces.
Remove from heat, and marinate in refrigerator over night.  Heat before serving as appetizer.
