Old South Vinegar Pie (1940)

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tspn nutmeg
  • 3 tbspns flour
  • 1/8 tspn salt
  • 2 tbspns melted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tbspns apple cider vinegar
  • 3 eggs, separated
Combine all ingredients except eggs. Cook over low heat until thick. Stir in egg yolks, beating well. Cook 1 minute longer. Cool.

Pour into baked pie shell, and top with meringue made with egg whites and 6 tablespoons sugar.
